Poor mental is not just "feeling blue" or "going through a phase." It is real sadness that is overwhelming and sometimes debilitating. According to the CDC, in 2021, more than 4 in 10 (42%) students felt persistently sad or hopeless and nearly one-third (29%) experienced poor mental health and more than 1 in 5 (22%) students seriously considered attempting suicide and 1 in 10 (10%) attempted suicide (https://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/mental-health/index.htm). We need to protect our youth by teaching them how to be self-aware, ask for help, and utilize self-care. That way, they can grow to become successful adults with a toolkit of mental wellness coping skills.
